Ten tips to reduce stress for students and start your test with peace of mind

The exam week is upon us again. For some it’s a piece of cake, for others it’s a time of headaches, stomach aches, blackouts or uncontrollably shaking limbs – it’s often part of it…

Ten tips to reduce stress for students and start your test with a calm feeling

1. Think positive

It starts with positive thinking. Thoughts like 'I won't make it' or 'I have to make it' cause stress. It's better to focus on the things you are good at and see the test as a repetition of everything you have already learned.

2. Plan ahead

Good planning is half the battle. You know exactly what you have to do. If you make a to-do list with your planning, you can cross something off when you have finished it. That gives a wonderful feeling!

3. Schedule breaks

It is very important to take enough breaks while studying. Schedule breaks; for example, read one chapter and then have a drink or walk around. That is feasible and concrete.

4. Don't forget to relax

Make sure you keep doing fun things, that relax. Sports helps against the physical complaints. Relaxation exercises also have an effect. By means of simple breathing exercises you can very easily reduce the tension in your body.

5. Avoid alcohol and energy drinks

It is especially important that you feel good about yourself. If you try to drink away the stress, it will come back twice as hard the next day. Anxious students should also avoid energy drinks, as caffeine actually increases stress.

6. Go to bed on time

Studying for too long is not good for anything. Your concentration decreases and you can no longer absorb the material properly. When you are rested and fit, studying becomes a lot easier. A good night's sleep yields much more than an extra hour of studying.

7. Admit that you are tense

Admit to yourself that you are stressed. Talk about that tension. For example with a parent, teacher, mentor or experienced fellow student. Just talking about it can be relaxing.

8. Don't set your standards too high

If you are tense, you may simply be demanding too much of yourself. So try not to be too much of a perfectionist. It is okay to make a few mistakes!

9. Tension is part of it

During the exam itself, you can use some tension. A little tension is part of it! It ensures that you can concentrate better and are more focused.

10. Blackout? Don't panic!

Are you completely at a loss? Are you blacking out during the exam? Don't panic. Skip the question or do something else for a while. You may not be able to access the knowledge for a while, but it will come back to you.

Bonus tip: Extra luck

Taking your test with your favorite pen. Bringing a picture of your cat or dog or a lucky charm. Some people find these "mental methods" calming. A little superstition can really help.
